To the northwest of Stade, near Abbenfleth, we find the impressive artillery fort of Grauerort.


It was built by the Prussians between 1869 and 1879 to protect Stade from enemy ships on the Elbe. Grauerort is a typical example of Prussian fortification architecture. Today cultural and other events take place here.
