Predecessors of the old town hall chapel could go back at least 1,000 years. Today’s church was built as a hall church with one nave that intersects the transept. The rectangular chancel was constructed in the 13th century. The octagonal central tower dates from this time, too; the church was not given a west tower.


In the 15th century the chancel was extended to include side-rooms. In 1604 the brewery was built. In the 17th century the east façade received a new three-gable front.


The Church of St. Cosmae also burnt down and received new features carried out in Hamburg. The only remaining objects from previous times are St. Gertrud’s altar (ca. 1500) which was taken from St. Nicolai’s church demolished in 1834, a relief of the crucifixion (ca. 1580) and a chandelier. 1682-84 the church received its impressive tower which is now a feature of the town.

Also after the town fire a new organ was built between 1668-73 by the master organ-builder from Glückstadt Berend Hueß and his apprentice Arp Schnitger on which Vincent Lübeck played from 1674. Vincent Lübeck later went on to Hamburg to continue his musical career.

The organ was renovated by the most prestigious of all north German master organ builders – Arp Schnitger. The organ was given back its historic sound.

Noteworthy features of the 17th century fittings are the main altar by Christian Precht from 1677 as well as the pulpit, font and especially the wrought iron railings in the baptistery. The church was thoroughly renovated between 1963 and 1966 and again between 1985 and 1991. During the renovation large parts of the exterior walls had to be renewed.
