This Gothic hall church with its three naves, the largest in the see of Bremen, originates from the first half of the 14th century and was built instead of its predecessor which went back to the 11th century. Only the west tower dates back as far as to the 13th century. In the Great Town Fire of 1659 the interior of the church was destroyed, then rebuilt.

The tower was given a high dome which was destroyed by lightning in 1724 and replaced by the present flat pavilion-roof. Interesting features of the interior are the altar and the chancel from 1660, the chandelier from the 16th and 17th centuries and a number of epitaphs. The organ, also destroyed in 1724, was replaced by a new one, designed by the master builder Erasmus Bielfeldt from Bremen. After thorough restoration the organ has now returned to its original state.

The interior of the church was extensively restored between 1958-60 and again in 1991. Thus part of the original roof features could be repaired.
